Cost per acquisition

What is a good CPA for a high-ticket offer?

A good CPA (cost per acquisition, also called CAC) is one that leaves you a healthy profit on each client. It comes from three numbers: cost per booked call, show-up rate and close rate. The industry average is about $200 per booked call, and BlackSky clients average $72.

What is CPA or CAC in high-ticket sales?

CPA (cost per acquisition) or CAC (customer acquisition cost) is the total you spend on ads to win one paying client. For a high-ticket offer of $2,000 or more, it is the one ad number that tells you if you make money.

For any business that runs ads to sales calls, CPA and CAC mean the same thing: ad spend divided by new clients. Some owners also add the cost of tools or a sales team. Whichever way you choose, count it the same way every month so you can compare.

Once you know your CPA, you are buying clients. The question is no longer whether ads work, but how many clients you want.

How do you calculate CPA from sales call numbers?

Divide your cost per booked call by your show-up rate, then by your close rate. Put your own numbers in, or book a call and we will work it out with you.

  1. Find your cost per booked call: ad spend divided by calls booked.
  2. Find your show-up rate: calls that happened divided by calls booked.
  3. Find your close rate: new clients divided by calls that happened.
  4. Divide the cost per call by the show-up rate, then by the close rate.

After that, it is just math. Work backwards from the number of clients you want to the calls you need, then to the ad spend that books those calls. If you want more detail on the first step, read how much a booked sales call costs.

What is a good CPA for a $2k-$20k offer?

A good CPA is set by your price and your profit margin, not by an industry rule. The lower your price, the less room you have, so the three numbers behind CPA matter more.

The benchmarks behind CPA
NumberIndustry averageWith a strong system
Cost per booked call$200BlackSky clients average $72
Show-up rate40-60%Up to 80% with a good no-show system
Close rate on calls that show upAt least 1 in 4 for $2k-$20k offersDepends on your closing skill

The page shows no price, so a call costs much the same to book whatever you charge, and a low price leaves little room. At a low price, the sales mostly pay back the ad spend. The profit is in high-ticket offers, which is why the system is built for offers of $2,000 or more.

To set your own limit, start with what a client is worth to you, including clients who stay longer than the first program. Take off what it costs to deliver, and decide how much of what is left you will spend to win the client. That figure is your highest acceptable CPA.

Why are CPM, CTR and cost per lead vanity metrics?

CPM, click-through rate (CTR) and cost per lead are vanity metrics, because they do not tell you if you made money. Cost per booked call, close rate and CPA do. A $1,000 CPM is fine if your CPA is profitable.

CPM is what you pay to show an ad 1,000 times. CTR is the share of people who click. Both tell you something about the ad, but nothing about whether the right people booked a call and bought. A cheap lead that never books, or books and never shows up, costs you money and time.

Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram ads) run as an auction. When the right people click, book calls and buy, the platform gives your ad a higher quality score, and you pay less to reach people. So the way to lower your costs is to attract better-fit people, not to chase cheap clicks.

How do you lower CPA on a high-ticket offer?

You have three levers: cost per booked call, show-up rate and close rate. The levers multiply, so a gain on two of them brings CPA down faster than a gain on one.

The three levers that move CPA
LeverBenchmarkWhat moves it
Cost per booked call$200 industry average; $72 BlackSky client averageOne ideal client, an offer that stands out, and a page that filters
Show-up rate40-60% industry; up to 80% with a good systemConfirm each booking and follow up no-shows
Close rateAt least 1 in 4 for $2k-$20k offersClosing skill, and calls only with people who fit
  • Lower cost per call with an offer for one ideal client and one big outcome. In a market full of the same ads, the offer must stand out, and the words on the page must push poor fits away.
  • Raise show-up with a process that confirms each booking, such as a WhatsApp message that asks the lead to reply, and follows up no-shows. The industry rate is 40-60%; a good system can reach up to 80%.
  • Raise close rate with calls that start warm. Pre-qualified people often buy on the first or second call. At least 1 in 4 is normal for $2k-$20k offers, and below that it is time to review the sales calls.

Is CPA different for coaches, consultants and service businesses?

The math is the same for every high-ticket offer sold on a call. What changes is the price, the buyer and how many clients you can serve, which changes the CPA you can accept.

A consultant with a high fee can accept a much higher CPA than a coach with a lower-priced program. Every business must also match new calls to how many it can take and serve. See how each one works: Facebook ads for coaches, Facebook ads for consultants and Facebook ads for service businesses.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CPA and CAC?

For any business running ads to sales calls, they mean the same thing: what it costs to win one paying client. Some businesses add tool or sales team costs to CAC. Pick one way to count it and keep it the same every month.

What CPA should I expect from Facebook ads for a high-ticket offer?

It depends on your own cost per call, show-up rate and close rate. The industry average is about $200 per booked call, with a 40-60% show-up rate. BlackSky clients average $72 per pre-qualified call. Book a call and we will work out your likely CPA with you.

Is a $1,000 CPM too high?

Not if your CPA is profitable. CPM only tells you what it costs to show an ad, not who sees it or whether they buy.

What counts as a high-ticket offer?

In this guide, high-ticket means $2,000 or more, sold on a sales call. At that price, one client can pay for a lot of ad spend. Below it, the sales mostly pay back the ads, and the sales call model is hard to make profitable.

Should I track cost per lead at all?

Use it to find a problem, not to judge success. If your CPA rises, it can help you see where the funnel broke. The numbers that count are cost per booked call, close rate and CPA.

How fast can I find out my CPA?

You can start from $25 a day, and first calls usually come in within 1-2 days, depending on spend. You need some calls and some closes before your CPA is reliable. You can see client outcomes on our results page.
